YoYo's story began in 2008 on the shores of Lake Tahoe when Alex + Terri asked one another the age-old question:
“If you could do anything, what would it be?”
And like a vision they knew ...
Off they went! 100 yoga studios in 100 Days, roadtrippin’ from Seattle to San Diego in the YoYo mobile with some spandex, 2 mats and the Ru, our OG studio pup. They chronicled this epic adventure on yoyoyogi.com, originally a blog!
“Now What?” they asked on Day 101. ”Where to?” Armed with the schoolin’ that yoga was a hell of a lot more than just a good sweat, they knew they’d bring their most excellent adventure to life!
Here in the chosen land of PDX, YoYoYogi—bricks and mortar—was born August 2010.
“YoYoYogi? What's that? A yogurt shop?” asked curious passerby-ers. But thanks to Alex + Terri’s vibrant, welcoming personality, those looking for a sweet treat stayed for some yoga and fell in love with the YoYo way.
Little by little the studio grew, movin' rooms and knocking down walls. Up Dog turned into Big Dog, Hot Dog into the Living Room, the Penthouse into Urban Hot. The Om Zone was born. Our motto: NO YOGI LEFT BEHIND. We were committed to bringin' every style of yoga to anyone who wanted to practice!
The people who walked through our doors these past 10 years became family. We celebrated birthdays, weddings and babies; we grieved losses and endings. We travelled across the world and shared backyard bbqs. We learned about yoga, each other and ourselves. We grew, landed, fell apart and began again by each other’s sides.
When we closed our doors on March 16, 2020 we knew we had to find a way to stick together, to share yoga NOW MORE THAN EVER.
Enter YoYo on the Go!! On March 23, 2020—when we launched our virtual platform—we had never filmed a class or taught to a camera EVER! And that was just the tip of the iceberg. Our virtual platform represents the creativity, joy, resilience and connection that is YoYoYogi. It was a chance to reunite with YoYos who have moved far, far away (or just across the river). It gave us the opportunity to reach more seekers from every state and all over the world. It is a platform to fulfill our mission: share mind-bendin’, body-stretchin’, peace-providin’ yoga with anyone and everyone who’d give it a try!
Happy are we to be back open in-person to practice together once again. Happy are we to now have the opportunity share YoYo’s style of yoga right here in PDX and all across this world.
We don’t know how this next chapter unfolds, but we do know this: WITHOUT YOU, WE ARE NOT.
